It is a known fact that you can turn rocksongs into bluegrass tunes. Hayseed
Dixie has proven that with many projects. But when To The Mountain
recently ended up on my desk it had beaten everything I ever heard so far.
Big Daddy Love hailing from North Carolina is naming their musical style Appalachian
Rock. Means you hear bluegrass instruments and melodies mixed with rock sound.
The result is definitely worth listening to. Seems the fans of the band have
the same opinion as Big Daddy Love plays roughly 15 gigs a month.
The CD starts off with the noisy search for a radio station until WCOK from Sparta, NC, announces new Music from Big Daddy Love, followed by the powerful a-capella intro to Peace Of Mind, which soon transfers into a pretty rocky tune.
All thirteen tracks have been penned by Daniel Justin Smith, among them Spirit Is A Window, which reminds of old times with the Eagles or the Flying Burrito Brothers. You can’t fix your mind on what’s coming next on this album because you’ll always get a surprise listening to the compositions of sound of the next tune. This is especially true for the 30-second intro Space And Time, which leads into the closing track Forever Rain.
